Preservatives are listed under non-medicinal ingredients on your bottle. Examples include methylparaben, polyquad, purite and benzalkonium chloride (BAK). BAK is most commonly used but also most irritating. Polyquad is equally effective but much more tolerable as it attracts bacterial cells while repelling eye cells. Look for this preservative in Tears Naturale and Systane products. Purite also tends to be less irritating and is found in Refresh brand products.
Preservative-free options are available in single-use vials that must be discarded after 1 dose. These are more expensive but benefit those who suffer from too much irritation with regular drops. There is a new preservative-free lubricant called Hylo that is unique with its airless application system that prevents bacteria from entering the bottle. As a result, it can be used for up to 6 months after opening.
At Midhurst Pharmasave we carry a wide variety of eye care products including Hylo. Come in to speak with your live well pharmacist today.
