With warm, sunny weather finally here, it is important to remember to stay safe this summer and protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Sunlight can cause damage to the skin that is seen immediately, such as redness and sunburn. It may also cause damage that shows up many years later in the form of skin cancer or signs of aging (wrinkles).
Following some easy sun care tips can help prevent skin damage. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply a generous layer to the skin - most people do not apply enough sunscreen to obtain the desired protection. Sunscreen should be applied 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and re-applied every 2 hours. Wear clothing that covers areas exposed to the sun such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and long sleeves and try to avoid direct sun exposure from 10am-2pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. Tanning increases the risk of skin damage and does not offer protection from further sun damage.
