DEET is the most effective insect repellent for mosquitoes, flies, fleas and ticks. The higher the concentration the longer it lasts but it can also increase the risk of toxicity. Recommend 10% to 30% DEET for adults and no more than 10% for children (OFF for Kids, etc.).These products generally work for 6 to 8 hours. Natural repellents like Citronella are less effective than DEET...and doesn't last as long. DEET repellents can reduce the effectiveness of sunscreens since the repellent disrupts the sunscreen's protective barrier.
Mozi-Q (seen on Dragon’s Den) is a homeopathic pill that is available at our pharmacy which can be taken by pets, children and adults 1hr prior to mosquito exposure.
To treat mosquito bites, hydrocortisone cream can reduce redness and itching. If you are sensitive to mosquito bites, consider taking an oral antihistamine before exposure to reduce some of the redness and itching caused by mosquito bites.
